Mining vocabulary / Plain language

A compact vocabulary for mining, hardware, telemetry, and developer workflows. Follow each term into its practical context.

ASIC
A chip designed for a specialized application. For a mining project, identify the exact algorithm and supported device configuration.
Hashrate
The rate of hashing work, expressed with a unit and an algorithm. Different algorithms are not comparable merely because their rates share a unit.
TH/s
Terahashes per second. One terahash is one trillion hashes; the algorithm remains part of the measurement context.
J/TH
Joules per terahash. For compatible observations, divide power in watts by hashrate in TH/s. Lower values use less energy per unit of hashing work.
Watt
A unit of power equal to one joule per second. It describes an energy-use rate rather than a total over a billing period.
Kilowatt-hour
An energy unit. A constant one-kilowatt load running for one hour uses one kilowatt-hour.
Share
A submission used as evidence of work in a mining-pool context. It is not automatically a network-valid block or a completed payment.
Stratum
A family of mining communication protocols. Verify exact implementation and version support across the complete connection path.
Worker
An operational identity whose meaning needs to be defined: it might represent a physical miner, a configured pool worker, or a sample record.
Telemetry
Observations reported by a system. Useful records carry identity, units, timestamps, and a clear distinction between zero and missing values.
Freshness
The age of an observation relative to the question being asked. A reachable collector does not guarantee that its device readings are current.
GPU utilization
A supported device-activity observation that needs workload context. It should not be treated as a universal measure of useful application throughput.
Read-only
An access boundary that permits observation without authority to modify the underlying system. Enforce it through actual permissions, not just interface labels.
Fixture
A fixed example dataset used to exercise software behavior. The public mining JSON files on this site are fictional fixtures, not live feeds.
Prompt injection
A risk in which untrusted content influences a language model’s behavior. Keep permissions enforced outside the model and important conclusions reviewed.
Measurement boundary
The scope of what a figure includes, such as device input power, a rack, or an entire site. Comparisons need compatible boundaries.
